a children's story about the environment (click here to listen to the story)
Nasty Twiggy loves to litter. He throws candy wrappers, crumpled papers and banana peelings all around...
...even when a trash can is just a few steps away.
Sometimes, Nasty Twiggy attempts to shoot his litter into the trash can.
More often than not, he deliberately misses the can.
He finally learned his lesson, one rainy day, when he woke up and hound his home flooded...
...with all the things he had thrown away.
Let's get involved! There are simple activities we can do to practice proper waste disposal in our own homes and in school.
- Remember to segregate your household trash into three (3) main groups: biodegradables, non-biodegradables, and residuals. There can be more in those things you consider trash. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
- Start a compost pit in your backyard. Dig a pit (ideally 3 feet deep) in a cool, shaded place. Each time vegetable or fruit scraps are thrown to the pit, make sure to cover it with a layer of dried leaves or a thin layer of soil to allow air to enter the pit, to help prevent bad odor. At the end of 45 days, you have free, organic fertilizer!
- Dont throw those old test papers! Recycle them! More about this soon :)
- Aluminum cans such as those of softdrinks can also be recycled. So make sure to leave them out of your garbage cans.
- Those catsup, soy sauce, vinegar etc bottles can be turned into cash. Ask these recycling companies, click here.
- Be reminded of the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure.
