RA 9003 Ecological Solid Waste Management Act

Extracted: Mainstreaming ESWM in the Philippine Educational System

The Republic Act No 9003 (RA 9003) or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 stipulates that it is the policy of the state to adopt a program that will ensure the protection of the public health and the environment, as well as the use of environmentally sound methods that maximize the utilization of valuable resources and encourage resource conservation and recovery.

However, not all action should be left to the government.

As responsible citizens, we must also do our share in making sure that future generations will still be able to appreciate the mountains, the streams and the forests God has given us.  To avoid further environmental damage, as well as to restore what has already been damaged, we must remember the 4Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.  Sometimes, we only remember the first three Rs and forget about recovering what has been lost to pollution and to environmental abuse.

The main weapon against our garbage problems is proper waste segregation.  Changing the way we dispose of our trash will significantly reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills.  Assuming that each household, through recycling and composting, can reduce its amount of waste by more than half, the amount of garbage that would be collected would decrease considerably.

However small our individual efforts may seem, together we can make a huge difference.  By giving a few minutes needed to segregate our trash, we help not only the environment, but also ourselves.  Don't you think it's time we return the care and love Mother Nature has given us?  Next - Proper Waste Disposal.
